Design Practice Location:
Shilling Brewing Co. is a new microbrewery and bar set in the distinctive triple-height space of the listed former Commercial Bank of Scotland. The modern classical building, designed by the architect James Miller and built in the 1920s, is infused with subtle Art Déco and Egyptian revival references. The project encompassed restoring this remarkable setting to its former glory, while reintroducing a new layer of Art Déco flare and historic undertones. The design enables customers to observe the brewing process, enjoying beverages authentically brewed on site. The proposal responds to the client’s simple brief to create the best brew house in Glasgow, and the team worked carefully to reveal the original interiors, overlaying contemporary features that resonate with the building’s rich history.
