Design Practice Location:
Originally a hostel for Reykjavík backpackers, this boutique hotel was renovated to offer a sustainable and tranquil refuge to its guests. The design objective of the restoration was to connect Icelandic nature with the city. This design was accomplished with natural materials and a monochromic colour palette that mirror Icelandic nature and culture. A profusion of natural light streams through the expansive guest room windows with sweeping views of the North Atlantic sea and snow-capped mountains to the north. Rooms are smartly appointed with furniture made from materials and colours that both reflect and connect with each picture-postcard view. North-facing window seats, for example, are upholstered in blue echoing the view of the Atlantic, while red, south-side sofas resonate the city’s ruddy hue. The geometric pattern on the 100% mohair blankets is reminiscent of traditional Icelandic knitwear and is situated in every guest room.
